Recently, I spent several hours with a new but great friend who has been on a vaguely similar journey to me. In many ways, your Quality of Life will simply be awful. In my first start-up as a founder, I had a great CTO and VPE and a pretty darn good VP Ops from the very beginning. 20×7, near as I can tell.
I started at Amazon before they had Amazon Web Services (AWS) so I was lucky enough to see AWS born out of the guts of all of the great operations work done for the amazon.com retail website. You can think of them beginning from very base infrastructural technologies, and in our case we’re betting exclusively on AWS as a cloud vendor.
Until now, Intercom has been a multitenant application hosted in a single region in AWS. We identified some “ known unknowns” too; problems we needed to solve, but didn’t know how just yet – like integrating the new region into our billing system. And so our former CTO and co-founder Ciaran Lee decided we were just going to start.
