What Makes a Great Leader?

Tom Tunguz

It’s very difficult question to answer. How do you judge a leader? Is it financial success? The loyalty they engender? Their ability to inspire? There are war-time leaders and peace-time leaders. Leaders may be understated or zealous. I’m not sure we’ll ever be able to say definitively what constitutes a great leader. Regardless, we all want to improve our ability to lead, whether it’s a small team or a Fortune 500.

Email is Amazing. You Just Have to Use It Properly.

SaaStr

One thing almost every founder I meet with these days has figured out is that outbound email campaigns work. But not always at first, not always the same wa y. My second cold email, I got a Top 3 prospect to call me back in 24 hours!

How we ensure alignment between sales and product

Intercom, Inc.

A great partnership between product and sales needs to be based on shared definitions of success and an agreed upon process to collaborate. Without these things, the relationship retreats to the magnetic stereotypes of both industries: Product teams think sales teams will do, say and sell anything to make money, while sales teams think product teams will build anything cool except things that actually make money.

At what stage should a startup hire a CMO?

SaaStr

Roughly, when Demand Gen is no longer the core function of marketing. This also often is the time when you are ready to expand beyond a core small, effective, efficient marketing team. When you have enough of a lead generation engine going, AND enough of a brand, that brand and corporate marketing strategy and positioning are more important than finding new leads and helping search out raw new opportunities.

Are you forgetting the “service” part of SaaS?

Practical Advice on SaaS marketing

Ok, let me remind us all of the blatantly obvious: “SaaS” stands for “software-as-service.” Yup, “service” is right there in the name. But looking at the way most SaaS solutions are marketed, too often it’s all about the “software”, and not much about the “service.” On website, in videos, during customer presentations, and in every other piece of marketing communication, it’s all about the software.

How do corporate venture capital firms different from conventional venture capital firms?

SaaStr

They aren’t as dependable. This doesn’t mean they are “worse”. It does mean be careful how you use them. This is issue #1. A few like Salesforce Ventures and GV are an exception, but let me explain: Corporate VCs often do not write a “second check”. But most institutional VCs save reserves for another check, if you are doing OK but not great. Institutional / financial VCs have motivations to bridge you if you need it.
