So the way VC funds do accounting and valuations is … weird. Most VC funds “mark-up” their investments to the price of the last round and … just sort of leave it there. If things go really bad, sometimes they’ll lower the valuation. And if it goes to $0, of course, they have to write it off. But they generally have a lot of lattitude on when to continue to carry an investment at the last round price.

As I’ve explored web3 I’ve been forming a mental model of the major innovations powering this enormous wave of innovation. At the moment, I see four clusters: A permanent ownership record that exists beyond and outside a company. The photos I take, the movies I buy, the music I rent, the emails I write and receive, the messages I send - all of these are captive.

Gartner released its latest “Best Performing Marketing Channel” survey , and while it’s not as informative (to me at least) as its CIO and Cloud reports, there are a few interesting learnings: A few learnings on getting those MQLs: Email is #1. Email, done right, has always worked and continues to work. Now, Gartner’s survey looks back at a period without IRL events, so email looked to be the #1 channel that took events’ place in 2021.

Is conversion rate optimization for SaaS and software different than traditional A/B testing for ecommerce? Is it all about getting people to click the “buy” button (like it is in Ecommerce)? Or is there more to it? I sat down with growth expert (and current director of growth at Planday) Frederic Linfjärd — and I asked him what he thought about these questions.
You’ve heard the marketing analytics spiel before. It goes something like: Marketing journeys are long, complicated, multi-channel paths. Tracking them is always imperfect, but if you employ an extensive, expensive, difficult-to-configure combination of tools, tracking systems, and deeply talented statistics professionals, you can build a high-quality, predictive attribution modeling structure that approximates reality with relatively minor gaps.

There’s a lot of fear of possible Russian cyberattacks stemming from Russia’s attempted takeover of Ukraine. Perhaps the biggest worry —and quite possibly the most likely to materialize — is that these cyberattacks will likely be finely tuned as retaliation for US financial moves against the Russian economy. The cyberattacks would be designed not to steal money or data per se, but to harm the US economy by strategically hitting major players in key verticals.

Not tomorrow, or with a random calendar link to meet next week. It’s not enough on its own: Following up immediately alone isn’t enough. Getting the prospect all the answers they need ASAP isn’t enough.

The SaaS P&L is critical to the management of your SaaS business. I talk about the SaaS P&L (profit and loss statement) almost every week with SaaS founders, finance, and accounting teams. All right, my fellow Chrome OS adventurer — see if this progression feels familiar: First: "Ooh, look! My Chromebook's getting a huge update this week! Cool new features! SO EXCITING!!". Then: "Oh. The update's here, but everything looks the same. Where's all the new stuff? So disappointing.". It's an all-too-common pairing here in the land o' Googley matters, and that exact progression is in the midst of playing out for many an eager Chromebook owner this very moment.
So this is the real start of the VPs-of-Sales Lose Their Job Season. Why? It takes until about now in the year for founders and VC boards to process both what happened last year and to align on if this year is on track. Around now, it dawns on folks the VP of Sales they have may not be the one they need. At a minimum, this is the time of the year it’s discussed.
The year was 1999 – the end of the millennium was slowly approaching, and everyone was buzzing with excitement. Mark, Parker, Frank, and Dave were developing their prototype in a one-bedroom rental apartment in San Francisco’s Telegraph Hill – they wore Hawaiian print shirts, brought their dogs to work, and had a poster of the Dalai Lama from one of Apple’s campaigns encouraging them to “think different.” They only worked on things they deemed important; “no fluff,”

When there aren’t enough developers to go around, what can a company like Apple do to try and fix the problem? Two things, really – invest in global education in coding skills, and make its existing environments easier to use. Apple won’t have a no-code future. Sales teams often struggle with configuration of price quotes when dealing with complex products or services or large product catalogs. Whether purposefully or by accident, sales reps often deviate from pricing and discounting guidelines.

So what’s going on with AE comp inflation? Everyone is looking for a higher OTE, and they’re often getting it. There are so, so many SaaS companies looking to hire AEs. But what I’ve seen anecdotally, BenchSights now has data on now: higher OTEs and OTE inflation is coupled with higher quotas. Put differently, while OTEs are up 10%-15% on average year-over-year … so are quotas.
