And what you can see is there is really almost no liquidity for startups and scale-ups in SaaS and Cloud at the moment. But the deal energy maintains a sense of momentum toward big liquidity events. Public SaaS and Cloud companies, and AI leaders like NVidia, have still generated a lot of cash for shares. Epic times.
I do think so, but it’s been 12 years of blogging and 10+ year of events and more. Does SaaStr still matter? So you gotta ask yourself that question as the year winds down. It’s a tough question I think all of us should ask going into a New Year. Do you still matter? Does your app still matter? So I asked myself that question.

Things start off looking bleak, with SaaStr Annual 2020 the first big tech event to be postponed due to Covid. The Cloud picked itself up, and accelerated 6+ years into the future. And after resisting doing digital events since the beginning, we decided we at least had one good idea. But that lasted just a few weeks, really.
Not digital events, which exploded since Covid. But good old fashioned, in-a-convention-center events are coming back. Many events like Coachella, Dreamforce, SaaStr Annual and more haven’t been produced since 2019 (!). SEMA and other more traditional events are already on. And boy, has it been a while.
SaaStr Annual has always been the go-to event for SaaS founders, executives, and investors, but 2025 is shaping up to be the best one yet. These have been the craziest of times, both in general and certainly for IRL events. The one upside is we now have a much clearer and better, digital strategy along with our IRL events strategy. If the world allows us, it will be a hybrid event with an IRL component in San Francisco (we have a venue).
A lot can happen when it’s a live event. Live events are unpredictable but always encompass two things: a) the event dates don’t change and b) you need a plan A, plan B, and at least a plan C, for when something doesn’t go accordingly to plan. Go to the events they’re going to. .

Restaurants, events, recruiting, and so many other industries are in deep trouble. But on balance, Covid-19 is dramatically accelerating SaaS: During “Shelter Plus” times, in the end, we’ve worked more in the Cloud: More Zooms. Yes, IRL Cloud companies have taken a hit — e.g., Eventbrite. You know this, but also. It’s now clear.
But there’s another SaaS leader that almost everyone in B2B software also uses also founded in 1999 — to manage their events. Managed to Make the Most of Virtual Events. While the overall category of Virtual Events software is in a funk, Cvent did OK. #2. 70% of Cvent’s revenue comes from its events software.
Was the “Covid Boost” in Cloud multiples just an anomoly? Put differently, if you look at multiples of revenue for top SaaS and Cloud companies above from 2014-2022, you could come to one of (at least) two conclusions today: Conclusion #1: Q2’20-Q4’22 Cloud Revenue Multiples Were a Covid Anomaly.

This has been an incredible roller-coaster for us in SaaS and Cloud since March 15, for some even more than others, but an incredible amount of change for all of us. Some of you are in the “Covid Decimated” category (travel, IRL events, etc) and things in many ways are as tough and rough as March. This was hard on all us.
And Hopin, a digital events company that hit $20m in its first year? If you can grow faster, it’s more worth it than ever in SaaS and Cloud. 1T spend on events annually? It’s worth 100x ARR. Let’s look at the slower growth SaaS companies in the index, like Box, Zuora, Dropbox, and Domo.
It was great digital event, the peak of digital events, and we had an incredible 20,000+ attended digitally (!). Today, Twilio is a $16 Billion Cloud giant and Jeff is CEO emeritus. A ways back, we had some of the best founders in SaaS join us for SaaStr Summit: Bridging the Gap to buck people during the lockdown times.
The SaaStr Annual is the largest non-vendor event in the industry, with 10,000+ attendees from all across the world coming together each year in the SF Bay Area. We also launched an affiliated $90m venture fund and had our inaugural SaaStr Europa event in Paris of 2018. We were the first major SaaS event back in the SF Bay Area.

From the CEOs of Slack and Zoom and MongoDB and Notion and Asana, to the top revenue and engineering leaders in Cloud. Yes, we charge for tickets to our IRL events, but for the most part — that’s it. And will remain so.
Amplitude is a quiet Cloud leader that you might not have heard of — unless you are building software. Some leaders like Slack have seen the same, but most Cloud leaders at scale with high NRR end up getting more and more of their revenue from their existing base, not new customers. 5 Interesting Learnings: #1. This is rare.
We’ll bring together the top Cloud executives, VCs and more together Sep 27-29 in Silicon Valley. We work hard to make tickets as inexpensive as possible for an event of this scale and type. Gartner released its latest “Best Performing Marketing Channel” survey , and while it’s not as informative (to me at least) as its CIO and Cloud reports, there are a few interesting learnings: A few learnings on getting those MQLs: Email is #1. Events are now coming back strong.

Portfolios in many cases were hit hard, with startups in travel, events, fitness, etc. hit hard, and VCs distracted with working out the issues in their portfolios: But the slow down lasted, at best, 60 days: First, Cloud stocks went on an unprecedented tear. As did Cloud revenues. That meant more competition.
