Dear SaaStr: Does Having a Board of Advisors Increase Your Chances of Getting Funding? No. Or maybe — only barely, a tiny bit. It does show you are hustling, if the advisors are truly great. If you get Eric Yuan or Marc Benioff to be an active advisor — well, then, you get some more attention. But that’s about it. They aren’t on the management team, they aren’t selling or building product or running a growth playbook.
In There’s No Such Thing as Series A Metrics , Charles Hudson explains that there is no magic milestone to raise a Series A. In this environment, I agree. The $1m ARR figure used to hold in 2018 & early 2019. But the data shows how much the market differs from a few years ago. Series A round size standard deviation has grown by between 4-5x in 4 years.

And most importantly, how does it make money? One way to approach that last question is to use this simple model: Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) How will your business reach prospects?

In March, LinkedIn launched an AI assisted growth loop. Fareed Mosavat and I recorded a convo where we broke it down step by step. We were shocked when we looked up the stats. From March to June it went from generating 0 to 1M uniques per month according to Ahrefs and is on one of the steepest growth curves we’ve ever seen for a content loop. ?️ Note: Fareed and I are thinking about turning this type of convo into a podcast.
I held off for many years on writing a post on Board Meetings. Why? Because every investor in the world writes lengthy posts on How to Have a Great Board Meeting. How to Have a Great Pre-Board Meeting. How to Have a Great Board Meeting Week. Etc. etc. etc. etc. VCs, once they have been doing it a while, basically become professional Board Members, and they write a lot about that.

The answer is yes - if you’re a top quartile company.

Dear SaaStr: When Should You Hire Your First Demand Generation Marketer in SaaS? My overly specific rough rule is about $20k in MRR. A deep dive on that and why here: I Hired My VP of Marketing at $20k MRR. It Wasn’t a Week Too Early. | SaaStr I.e., usually much, much earlier than you might think. Why? Assuming you are growing reasonably quick, a head of demand gen at even $20k in MRR can be accretive over the next 12 months.

Dear SaaStr: When Bootstrapping a SaaS Product, What Should You Be Aware Of? Just a few observations from bootstrapped SaaS companies I’ve had some involvement with: It probably will take 3–4 years longer to get to $10m ARR or so. I don’t fully have the data to support it, but usually, bootstrapped startups take longer. Atlassian and Qualtrics took longer to get to $10m ARR.
