“Storytelling is the most underrated skill,” said Ben Horowitz, founding partner of Andreessen-Horowitz, in a Forbes interview. He continued : “You can have a great product, but a compelling story puts the company into motion.”. It appears many startups, including SaaS companies, took the words of Ben and other experts who signaled the importance of storytelling to heart.
At the end of 2019, I presented Eventbrite’s product plans to the board for 2020. These plans included a lot of the goals you likely have in your company: improvements in acquisition, activation, and retention. One of our board members asked: “I understand these goals for the year. But long term, how high could we push this retention number? What would great retention be for Eventbrite?”.
I was talking to an old friend the other day who’s marketing chief at a successful infrastructure startup. “Congratulations,” I said, “I know it was a long slog, but after about a decade of groundwork it looks like things have really kicked in. I hear your company’s name all the time, I’m told business is doing great, and Gartner literally can’t stop talking about your technology and category.” “Yes, we’ve successfully created a categ

Let’s talk about that trickiest of subjects: Product Judgment. Also known as Product Intuition or Product Instinct or Product Taste, it is the idea that you can use your own judgment to (1) accurately predict what your customers need, want and value, and (2) design and ship the right solution for them. Here, I will tackle some of the common questions around it: Does it exist?
The 4 Ps of marketing… You’ve probably heard about them from a friend, a textbook, or even at school. I know it sounds like a boring topic that’s common sense, but there is more to it than meets the eye. And no, it’s not just for large companies… the smaller you are, the more important for you it is to leverage the 4 Ps.

There are some questions in SaaS that are, at some level, almost a mystery: Why was Veeva able to burn only ~$10m net on its way to an IPO? Yet Box needed $250m? Both sell to the Enterprise. So it’s not that. Yes, Veeva has a very high ACV, with prepaid contracts. That helps a ton. Yet … is that really the whole story? Why did Atlassian essentially need no capital to IPO, yet Slack raised epic amounts ?
You hear the terms SaaS, subscription, term licenses and perpetual license software tossed around frequently. The terms aren’t universally understood, nor are the implications of each on the financial model of a company, so the following is an effort to provide an overview. Given that so many VC pitches are over Zoom now, I thought it would be worth re-freshing this classic SaaStr post on things it’s easy to get wrong when pitching investors. Pitching VCs is like anything. You’ll get better at it over time. Later, you’ll even get great at it. Once you know how it works, it’s not even that hard to knock it out of the park.
Recently, we welcomed Hollie Wegman to SaaS Office Hours to talk about marketing to developers. It was our first virtual event, and we had hundreds of people attend. Given the success of the format, we are going to continue it. During our chat, Hollie shared some valuable wisdom from her experience as a marketing leader at Segment, Envoy, Mulesoft, and Salesforce.
As we touched on in last week’s episode, the unjust killing of George Floyd has prompted many of us to look at our own relationship with perpetuating racial injustice and to look for ways we can participate in and reinforce racial equity. At Intercom, we have a lot of work to do in that regard but we feel that a small and organic way for us to start is by connecting the audience we’ve built for this podcast with voices that need to be heard but traditionally aren’t, particularly in t
Speaker: Ben Epstein, Stealth Founder & CTO | Tony Karrer, Founder & CTO, Aggregage

In this new session, Ben will share how he and his team engineered a system (based on proven software engineering approaches) that employs reproducible test variations (via temperature 0 and fixed seeds), and enables non-LLM evaluation m

For us SaaS Old Timers, it’s still all sort of about Salesforce. We built apps on Salesforce. We hired our VPs from Salesforce. We learned from Salesforce. We “copied” Salesforce. It remains the #1 pure SaaS company by far and is a force of nature. A $150 billion+ mega-company. The first to $1b in ARR, the first to $10b in ARR, and likely, the first to $100b in ARR.
It’s 2020. The ordinary ways we do things have been disrupted left and right, up and down. Circumstances have forced many businesses to shift their brick-and-mortar operations and real-world activities online. So it’s fair for a marketer to ask: “Is now a good time to be running webinars? “ The short answer is, now’s a great time.
The past few weeks have shown us how important it is for all of us to deeply empathize with those around us. With that comes the need for clear communication and open dialogue with customers and employees alike. These are all key components of a business resilience strategy, one that bolsters up a business that’s faced with challenges and sets it up for growth long-term.
For SaaS businesses, improving retention is one of the easiest and most effective ways to drive revenue and profits. With a clear link between failed payments and customer churn, having a robust failed payment recovery solution isn’t optional—it’s essential. Achieving your retention goals starts with the right solution.

How much do you talk about Customer Marketing? Be honest. While the concept may sound old hat to those that have been in the software business for a long time, in SaaS in particular, very little tools, processes, and software are applied to marketing to customers after they are closed. Over the last 5+ years, we’ve all started to turn Customer Success into a science and a key discipline in SaaS.
Can you spot your future customers in the wild? What about when they’re right under your nose (or on your website)? More importantly, do you have a way to capture those leads while they’re on your site? Even if you know everything there is to know about your ideal customers, it’s not always easy to recognize them through observation alone. It’s possible you have qualified leads covertly browsing your online shop or poking around your features page at this very moment.
It’s easy to see communication skills as a gift — either you’ve got them or you don’t. But communication skills can make or break your success. If you’re a skilled communicator, you’re more likely to be perceived as an expert. If you speak eloquently at a job interview, you’re more likely to get the job. In fact, according to a recent survey of approximately 1,000 employers, effective oral communication is the most desired skill in job candidates.

Q: What is customer lifetime value, and why is it important? It might not be that important. CLTV is critical (of course), but it has become less useful as a planning tool over time in SaaS. In the early days of SaaS, we all focused on Customer Lifetime Value. In B2C and high-churn environments, it’s indeed a critical metric. You do need to know how long your customers last.

Many companies wrongly think they have to either build an inbound prospecting strategy or an outbound one. What you actually need is a strategy that incorporates both.
