Because that’s before fees and expenses.

It’ll come as no surprise that many of the Buffer team are active on most social media platforms. We have several TikTokers, Instagrammers, YouTubers, Threaders, and more, many of whom use these networks to support their small businesses and side projects or grow their personal brands. Over the past year or so, though, LinkedIn has quickly become many Bufferoos’ social platform of choice.
Founder mode became all the rage last week, following a Brian Chesky speech (whose contents are seemingly not available online) and a Paul Graham blog post about that speech. Since everyone’s weighing in on founder mode, and a few long-term readers have specifically asked for my take, that will be the subject of this post. Founder-mode is defined in opposition to manager-mode, the conventional wisdom as taught in business schools, about how to manage an organization.
While HubSpot's price tag might make some B2B business owners wince, it’s worth considering the value it can offer. As a business leader, you’ve probably spent a decent chunk of time weighing up different CRM solutions. There’s a lot to consider, and price is just one cog in a bigger machine. If you’ve come across HubSpot, you’re probably torn between the all-singing, all-dancing features, and the cost—you’re not the first to be caught in this limbo.

Most integrated payments providers share a percent of the payment revenue with their software partners. But, oftentimes, that revenue share is only a fraction of the true income potential software providers can realize. LinkedIn’s evolution from job search site to social media platform seems complete with the network’s roll-out of its own vertical short-form video feeds in various sections of the app and website. Video itself is nothing new to LinkedIn — you’ve always been able to upload your own clips in various formats — but this focus for creators is.

So one of SaaStr Fund’s latest investments is Mangomint, a vertical SaaS platform for spas and salons. Now … that sounds niche, and it sounds crowded. And it is. There are multiple vendors in different segments, including Mindbody which IPO’d a SaaS generation ago and then taken private in a $2B Vista acquisition. And yet, today Mangomint is at eight figures in ARR, growing 100%+, with 110% NRR from SMBs.
Before I started my business three years ago, I never would have called myself an activist. I thought activists were the people on the front lines of protests, the people holding up signs at local government meetings, the people pushing you to call your senator about important issues. And then I started a bookstore with a mission of celebrating women, especially Black women.

So TechCrunch had a good story on a 19-year journey of Sharefile to an $875,000,000 exit. It was founded way back in 2005, back when my last SaaS startup was, so I have a dim memory of it. Fast forward to today, they’ve sold for a stunning $875 million. But it’s not quite that simple. It was bootstrapped for the first 6 years, and then acquired by Citrix in 2011 for an undisclosed amount, so likely $100-$150m or less.

So we’ve been doing SaaStr Annuals for a stunning ten years (!) and we have a ton of data. One thing I can tell you is sponsors and partners who staff their booths with junior folks that just stare at their phones all day typically don’t see the ROI of their peers that … well … do more. Now if events are a sales function budgeted by marketing, then at first this seems to make sense.

So there have only been 3 SaaS IPOs since 2021. Just 3. But all 3 are pretty good ones: Klaviyo, blowing past $1B in ARR; OneStream, growing 37% at $500m ARR; and Rubrik, growing a stunning 35% at $920,000,000 in ARR. (Note: Rubrik’s ARR and growth numbers remain a bit confusing as it transitions 100% to SaaS-based revenue). Woah. The demand for cybersecurity products that work remains unbowed!
