So That VP That Has Done it Before always cost more than the stretch VP. They ask for more salary, and a bigger team. As they should. But in the past few years, the gap has grown and grown. Recently I talked with a founder who had hired a seasoned VP of Marketing at $3m that had an 8 person content marketing team. Not an 8 person team at $3m ARR, but just 8 on content alone!

There’s a prevailing narrative that the health of the Bay Area startup ecosystem faces challenges. San Francisco’s share of startup rounds by count has fallen from its perch ten years ago. But that’s not the full story. In 2021, San Francisco Bay Area startups raised $126b. In 2019, US startups raised $126.4b. In the span of two years, a region’s startups raised as much capital as all of the US.
Why is it that the need for operations in marketing and sales is never questioned, yet Customer Success isn’t given the same allowance? Organizations invest in MQL and SQL processes without fail. But they stop short of extending that same support to CS generate high-intent leads. Even though CSQLs have a lower customer acquisition cost, faster rate of return, and high close-rate, says Tony D’Auria, industry principal at Valuize, a customer lifecycle consultancy.

Every day, more companies are adopting “work from anywhere” policies to attract and retain talent. Many of these companies— including 80% of the Fortune 100 — now leverage Slack to enable real-time collaboration from anywhere. With over 18 million daily active users sending over 1.5 billion messages every week, it has clearly become part of a core tech stack driving the modern workplace.
It’s no secret that the current uncertain economic climate is taking a toll on our work and personal lives. During times of uncertainty, executive leadership teams make more conservative financial decisions in order to prepare for and/or prevent any major difficulties for the companies that they lead. These decisions and preventative actions have repercussions that engineering leaders and their teams must face.
Most people are at least somewhat on edge about the economy at the moment, and SaaS companies are also seeing cause for concern. But if you can maintain your sense of focus and prioritize your key performance indicators (KPIs), you should be able to survive or even thrive during the market downturn.
Dear SaaStr: What Are Some Lies Founders Tell Themselves? #1 Lie. That it will get easier. It never gets easy, but it can get less difficult: You get better. You constantly learn, and in not that long of a time, become one of the experts in your space. At some point, you stop being at risk of going bankrupt. This does let you breathe. At some point, you have a brand, and that makes your growth more predictable.

Most integrated payments providers share a percent of the payment revenue with their software partners. But, oftentimes, that revenue share is only a fraction of the true income potential software providers can realize. “You have zero privacy anyway. Get over it,” Scott McNealy said of online privacy back in 1999, a view the former CEO of the now-defunct Sun Microsystems reiterated in 2015. Despite the hue and cry his initial remarks caused, he’s been proven largely correct. Cookies, beacons, digital signatures, trackers, and other technologies on websites and in apps let advertisers, businesses, governments, and even criminals build a profile about what you do, who you know, and who you are at very intimate le
Dear SaaStr: How Do I Reject a VC Without Spoiling the Relationship? Be (1) clear (2) and respectful. Let me use myself as a case-study. I have one spoiled VC relationship — all the rest I consider pretty strong. Here’s what happened to me: I told this Top Tier VC what the valuation was, my Ask. I was 100% clear on this in every way, shape and form.

The other day I was looking at an ARR bridge [1] with a young finance ace. He made a few comments and concluded with, “and net revenue retention (NRR) is thus 112%, not bad.”. I thought, “Wait, stop! You can’t calculate NRR from an ARR bridge [2].” It’s a cohort-based measure. You need to look at the year-ago cohort of customers, get their year-ago ARR, get that same group’s current ARR, and then divide the current ARR by the year-ago.
Want to get outbound going, for the first time? What almost never works, somewhat surprisingly, is hiring a Director of Outbound as your first outbound hire. I see many startups want to add outbound, but not really have a lot of experience. They don’t know outbound, they haven’t done it, they don’t get it. And especially, a new VP of Sales comes in without real outbound experience.
For SaaS businesses, improving retention is one of the easiest and most effective ways to drive revenue and profits. With a clear link between failed payments and customer churn, having a robust failed payment recovery solution isn’t optional—it’s essential. Achieving your retention goals starts with the right solution.

Your smartphone is a powerful computer in your pocket — and with Android, part of that PC-like muscle means being able to plug your phone into any Windows, Mac, or ChromeOS system and then drag and drop files either way. Unlike iPhones, Android devices allow you to access their file systems directly from a desktop, without the need for any cumbersome interfaces or complicated procedures.
Each person on your team has different needs, responds to feedback in different ways and evolves in different trajectories – and management should always reflect that. Even when you reach the perfect team dynamic – a new hire or budget cut can easily throw things off balance. But no matter how isolating a management position can feel, you’re not going through it alone.
So I saw this tweet, and even a decade after our acquisition by Adobe, it sort of hurt: Currently evaluating #DocuSign vs #AdobeSign for clients. Started with DocuSign, finding a few things not that intuitive, but just had an amazing support chat experience. Definitely better than any #Adobe support experience I've ever had. Literally not even close. — Jeff Meier (AZ + Pfizer1 + Pfizer2 + Omicron) (@meier_j) October 5, 2022.
