“Failure does not come through making mistakes, but in refusing to learn by mistakes how to avoid them.”. —Walter D. Moody, Men Who Sell Things, 1907. Win rates not where they need to be? Dear SaaStr: Should I Start My SaaS App Off Totally Free? Almost always — no matter how freemium you want to go in SaaS, you should at least have a paid edition on Day 1. Even if you are going pure freemium. My top 50 biggest mistakes include not charging at all for our first few months. Free “customers” for many SaaS apps can be a waste of a fair amount of time and energy — and in fact worse than that: First, you usually don’t get that many free users in B2B.

Setting aside the technical questions around such a migration for a paragraph or two, this move will improve Basecamp’s efficiency materially. For a hypothetical startup, a 60% reduction in infrastructure costs boosts sales efficiency by 11% & net income margin by at least 12%.
So, you're ready to leave your iPhone for greener pastures — specifically, the bright green hue of Google's Android ecosystem. It's a major move, to be sure, but it doesn't have to be daunting. Beneath the surface-level differences, Android and iOS actually have a lot in common — and with the right steps, you can switch from an iPhone to an Android device without losing anything significant (including your sanity).

Dear SaaStr: The Startup I’m Working At is Getting Acquired. How Much Can I Negotiate? Unfortunately, as a non-CEO, non-founder of an acquired start-up … you have almost no ability to really negotiate. You can try a little, but it’s rough. Overall, your ability to negotiate in M&A in any context, in any job, is based on your ability to walk for something better, or just walk.

It discusses go-to-market funnel and how leading indicators are basically up and lagging ones are down.
Dear SaaStr: We Have 4 Co-Founders. How Many Should Be on the Board? Here is my uber-recommendation: No matter how many founders you have, only 1-2 should be in the key decision-making capacity. Any more than that is just going to create way too much confusion and decision paralysis. This is different from equity split. However you split equity, so be it.

Alex Delivet , one of the protagonists of the Paris startup scene, has experienced this predicament first-hand.

In SaaS, I think one of the biggest traps you can get yourself into as a founder is doing Low ROI things for one minute longer than you have to. Of course, this is true in all start-ups. But quickly, in SaaS, it becomes worse. Why? Because they are more functional areas to handle, earlier. You need engineering, product in all start-ups — but in SaaS, even in the very early days, you also need sales, client success, true support, demand gen marketing, etc.
I recently had the genuine pleasure of attending Scott Ingram’s 2022 Sales Success Summit. (Really! Is every sales event so provocative and fun?). Here are some things I learned and loved. But first —. What is the Sales Success Summit? The summit is an idea-rich, TED-style event held over two days. The speakers, drawn from Scott Ingram’s Sales Success Stories podcast , are the #1 top sellers (or in the top 1% of sellers) in their companies.

I’ve learned to keep a collection of useful Windows tools and repair environments around. They help me restart, troubleshoot, and — if necessary — repair Windows installations that are having difficulties. These could be related to hardware problems, Windows updates gone bad, device or driver issues, and a whole lot more. I keep all these tools on a single USB drive that I like to call the ultimate bootable Windows repair drive.
So this year has been rough on SaaS and Cloud stocks, with multiples down 75% from a year ago and the markets overall down 50% or more. But the impact hasn’t been even. Leaders like ZoomInfo and Paycom that combine strong growth with strong profits have seen their stock prices stay relatively high, often at 15x ARR still. And those without both have suffered the most.
